SMS Magic Quick Troubleshooter
SMS Magic requires a user account with a supported 2-way sms gateway provider. You can't just download the app and start using it.
Number 1 cause of misunderstandings and difficulties
Your iPad 3G is not a phone and cannot connect to the global telephone system to receive SMS messages, even if you put a cell phone sim in it. You can only send and receive SMS messages via a 2-way sms gateway, after you have completed setting up your account. You must use a phone to receive a passcode to activate your account.
If you have already tried to set up an account using your iPad sim number and are still waiting, you will never receive your passcode. You will need to change the number using the Sender ID facility on the website.
Number 1 cause of authentication failures
Your carrier account username and the username you enter when setting up SMS Magic must be exactly the same. You can't easily change your carrier account username, you need to change your SMS Magic username to match. This is what the Settings icon on your iPad looks like (it may not be on your main screen, page left or right until you find it).
Tap this icon, scroll down to to the bottom and tap the SMS Magic icon. Edit your username or password to match your carrier account username or password exactly, including capitalization if any. Also check that your reply number, if used, is one authorised for use by Text Magic
Exit the settings app and restart SMS Magic. Within a few seconds you should see your account balance on the screen.
Number 1 cause of network and wrong number errors
Any reply number you enter during setup must be:
For maximum flexibility in using the app, leave the Reply Number field empty.
"Wrong parameter value xxxxxxxx for parameter from"
This error usually indicates that you have erroneously configured your Text Magic account to reply to a phone number.
Reconfigure your Text Magic account exactly as described and illustrated in the Setup Guide and the error should resolve.
IOS 6 Privacy Settings - after granting the app permission to use your phone contacts, you may need to restart your device.
A black screen indicates a failed or incomplete installation. The most likely reason for this is premature dismissal of the keyboard. You will need to delete the app and reinstall from your iTunes backup, carefully following the instructions in the Setup Guide.
You will get errors if you try to add country codes to local numbers. This is because SMS Magic automatically adds them for you before sending. If you also do this then they get added twice, resulting in undeliverable numbers.
Using numbers in name fields e.g. John Doe(1) or John Doe-2 will cause errors. If you can't give each of these contacts their own entry, you will have to enter these numbers manually.
SMS Magic has no access to your account details. If you change e.g. your Sender ID you must also update the phone number in SMS Magic Settings.
If you use Unicode (non-European characters) in a message to a non-Unicode-enabled phone, or on a network which does not support Unicode (e.g. USA) then the recipient may see only code numbers. The characters supported on basic GSM networks can be found here.
Changes to default settings have no effect on suspended apps. You need to exit the app or restart your device to enable these changes, see the FAQ for more details.
Note: The supported carriers operate public SMS gateway services, and know nothing about your SMS Magic app. Contact them only for account-related issues such as passwords etc. If the above information does not help you to resolve any difficulties with SMS Magic, please Contact SMS Magic Support.
